History of Isle of Man

Students learned more about the history of Isle of Man every day. They learned of a small island state in the Irish sea, sandwiched between England and Ireland, where Scottish mountains can even be seen from its hill peaks, surrounded by 4 islets called the Calf of Man, St. Patrick’s Isle, St. Michaels Isle and St. Mary’s Isle. The also learned about and visited the capital city, Douglas and that though the island is a British Crown Dependency, Isle of Man does not form part of the United Kingdom. They further discovered that Isle of Man boasts the oldest parliament in the world called Tynwald and the lower branch of parliament is called the House of Keys. At the time, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II was the head of state, and the Governor was Sir John Lorimer. Students were fascinated by the great influence of the Island’s Celtic, Vikings and Maritime past.
